An earthquake with a magnitude of 7 struck Shigatse, in Tibet’s Xizang province, on Tuesday, killing 126 people. The earthquake destroyed many structures, and rescue operations are ongoing as authorities fear some people might still be trapped under the rubble.
The earthquake occurred at 6:50 AM Nepali time and was felt in Nepal, India, and Bangladesh.
Nepalis in Tibet Reported Safe
There are around 5,000 Nepalis in Tibet, including approximately 100 Nepali traders near the epicenter in Dingri village. According to Nepal’s Consulate General in Lhasa, all Nepalis in the region are safe, and no casualties have been reported among them.
Nepal’s Consul General in Lhasa, Lakshmi Prasad Niraula, told BBC Nepali, “We immediately contacted the Nepali community and local authorities after the earthquake. Everyone is safe, and there are no injuries.” The consulate in Lhasa itself reported no significant impact.
Damage and Relief Efforts
Over 1,000 houses were destroyed in Shigatse alone, and electricity and water supplies were disrupted in the affected areas.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered full-scale search, rescue, and relief efforts. He emphasized strengthening earthquake monitoring and warning systems, delivering emergency supplies promptly, repairing damaged infrastructure, and ensuring basic needs, including shelter and warm clothing, are met for all affected people.
