Elon Musk Gets Strict on Parody Accounts

Social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) is introducing strict rules to control parody accounts. Starting April 10, all parody, fake, commentary, and fan accounts will be required to clearly label themselves as such in their profile names.

No More Real Images in Parody Profiles

Under the new rule, parody accounts can no longer use the real photos of the individuals they are imitating. This step aims to reduce confusion among users who might mistake these fake profiles for real ones.

Why This Rule Was Needed

Parody accounts often look very similar to real accounts, tricking users. Even Elon Musk, the owner of X, has had many parody accounts created in his name. These accounts often impersonate him and confuse people by looking nearly identical to his official profile.

Official Statement from X

In a recent post on X’s official account, the platform stated that the rule is designed to help users clearly understand that parody, commentary, or fan accounts are not affiliated with real individuals. This change will reduce impersonation risks and misleading activities.

Users React to the New Rule

After the announcement, one user commented that the new policy could help eliminate thousands of fake Elon Musk accounts. Another user shared that they receive messages weekly from fake Elon Musk accounts pretending to offer rewards or promotions.

Examples of Fake Elon Musk Accounts

Some parody accounts of Elon Musk have promoted memes and jokes, while others have been used to promote cryptocurrency scams. Recently, a fake account with nearly 1 million followers told users to like and comment for a chance to win a Tesla car. That post got over 428,000 likes and more than 200,000 replies.

Previous Steps Taken by X

Earlier in January, X introduced a requirement for parody accounts to mention the term “parody” in their profile section. However, the new update makes this rule stricter by requiring the term to appear right at the beginning of their account names.

Role of Blue Tick and Labeling System

X has introduced label and blue tick verification as tools to fight impersonation on the platform. But the effectiveness of these tools remains a topic of debate, as some fake accounts have still managed to get verified.

European Union Also Concerned

The European Union has raised concerns that even some verified accounts mislead users and violate online content regulations. This highlights the need for stronger enforcement of account labeling and verification.

Deadline to Follow the New Rule

All parody, commentary, and fan accounts must update their profiles to comply with the new rule before April 10. Those that fail to do so may face restrictions or removal from the platform, according to X.
