Top-seeded American Emma Navarro delivered a commanding performance to clinch the WTA Merida Open title, defeating qualifier Emiliana Arango 6-0, 6-0 in Sunday’s final.
Navarro, ranked No. 10 in the world, secured her second WTA title without dropping a set throughout the tournament. This marks her first title win at the 500-level, adding to her Hobart crown from last year. The victory was particularly significant as it was the first time Navarro was seeded No. 1 at a tournament.
The 22-year-old needed just 55 minutes to dispatch Arango, becoming the first player to win a WTA final with a double bagel since Iga Swiatek defeated Karolina Pliskova in the 2021 Rome final.
For Arango, the tournament was a breakthrough moment. The 24-year-old Colombian, ranked 133rd, reached a WTA semifinal and final for the first time in her career. Despite the loss, her strong performance this week will propel her into the top 100 when the new rankings are announced on Monday.
