To celebrate the 70th anniversary of Nepal-China diplomatic relations and International Everest Day 2082, Everest climbers from both countries came together for a symbolic friendly football match in Kathmandu.

A Unique Sports Event to Honor Friendship

A special football match was organized between Nepal’s Sagarmatha Friendship Team and China’s Mount Chomolungma Team on Wednesday at the ANFA Complex. This event was jointly organized by Alpine Sports Federation Nepal with technical support from ANFA.

Match Inauguration and Key Guests

The game was inaugurated by Chinese Ambassador Chen Song, who handed over the football to the main referee. Other notable attendees included:

  • Tankalal Ghising, Member Secretary of the National Sports Council
  • Pankaj Bikram Nembang, President of ANFA
  • Romanath Gyawali, Vice President of Alpine Sports Federation

Nepal Wins the Friendly Match

In an exciting match between the two Everest climber teams, Nepal’s Sagarmatha Friendship Team secured a 4-1 victory over the Chinese team.

The game was held under the motto: “United by Mountain, Bonded through Football”, symbolizing unity and mutual respect through the universal language of sports.

Promoting Unity Through Symbolic Acts

The event featured a “Summiteers Football Signature Ceremony”, where Everest climbers from both nations signed a football as a mark of unity and mutual respect.

Medals, Trophies, and Words of Inspiration

After the match, both teams were awarded Friendship Trophies, medals, and certificates to honor their participation and celebrate the spirit of friendship.

Speakers emphasized how such events promote cross-cultural exchange and deepen diplomatic ties beyond mountaineering.

More Than Just a Match

Vice President Romanath Gyawali stated that the match had strengthened Nepal-China relations, adding a new dimension to Everest climbing history.

The participating Chinese climbers were part of the Everest Summiteers Summit 2025, hosted by Everest Alliance Nepal, where climbers from over 20 countries were honored.

Everest Alliance Chairperson Sudarshan Nepal announced that the Summit will be held again next year, expanding into a two-day event.
