Three expert organizations have submitted a concept paper to the government with important recommendations to make the National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy, 2081 more effective. The concept paper was jointly prepared by the Center for Cyber Security Research and Innovation Nepal (CSRI Nepal), the Information Security Response Team Nepal (NPCERT), and the Internet Governance Institute (IGI), and was handed over to the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Prithviesubba Gurung, on Sunday, as informed by the Founder President of CSRI Nepal, Chiranjeevi Adhikari.
According to Adhikari, while receiving the concept paper, Minister Gurung expressed that the AI policy would be advanced transparently based on everyone’s participation and feedback. He committed to passing and implementing the policy soon. During the meeting, the experts welcomed the government’s policy in the context of the growing use of AI but emphasized the need to address the potential risks to cybersecurity and the importance of AI’s role in national security, urging that it should be appropriately incorporated into the policy.
The concept paper presented by the expert organizations includes ten recommendations for formulating a policy that aligns with Nepal’s socio-economic development, national aspirations, and global AI trends. The paper stresses the need to prioritize, set timelines, clarify responsibilities, strengthen monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, focus on capacity development, promote collaboration, and place a high priority on ethics and inclusivity to make the policy implementation effective.
