Facebook and Instagram Ignored Government's Request

The Government of Nepal has made several attempts to bring social media platforms under its legal framework. However, major platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Threads have not responded to these efforts. According to the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, only four platforms—Viber, WeTalk, TikTok, and Nimbuzz—have completed the registration process so far.

There are more than 40 social media platforms currently active in Nepal, but most of them have not followed the official listing procedure. Big names such as X (formerly Twitter), Snapchat, LinkedIn, WeChat, YouTube, Telegram, Truth Social, Reddit, and LINE are also not registered, even though they continue to provide services within the country.

The ministry had first issued a notice on Mangsir 15, 2080, requiring all individuals, companies, or organizations running social media platforms in Nepal to get listed within three months. The rule also asked them to appoint a local contact point, a resident grievance officer, and someone responsible for monitoring self-regulation.

Even after clear instructions, most platforms did not cooperate. The ministry said it had hoped platforms would follow the rules so that users in Nepal could use social media freely and responsibly, while companies would operate legally and transparently.
