Landslides in Indonesia

Heavy rain on Monday caused floods and landslides in Central Java Province, Indonesia, killing 21 people. The floods affected nine villages in the Pekalongan area, while landslides hit villages at the hills’ base.

Photos and videos released by Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency show homes buried under debris in the affected areas.

According to Abdul Muhari, Indonesia’s Disaster Management Agency spokesperson, landslides triggered by the floods buried two houses and a café in the Petungkriyono Resort area. The disaster also destroyed 25 homes, one dam, and three bridges connecting villages.

At least 13 people were injured, and nearly 300 residents are now staying in temporary government shelters. Search efforts are ongoing to locate five missing people.

On Tuesday afternoon, heavy rain and thick fog delayed rescue operations. Difficult terrain, landslides, and poor weather conditions made the search and rescue efforts challenging. However, operations resumed on Wednesday in the flood-affected areas near the riverbanks, despite the risks for rescue workers.
