Ram Sahay Panday, the internationally acclaimed folk dance artist and Padma Shri awardee, passed away on Tuesday morning at the age of 92 after battling a prolonged illness. He breathed his last at a hospital in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, as confirmed by family sources.
A pioneer in the art of Rai folk dance, Ram Sahay Panday from Bundelkhand dedicated over six decades to promoting this traditional dance form. He is especially known for blending the rhythms of the Mridangam with Rai dance, which he introduced to audiences both in India and abroad.
Over the course of his illustrious career, Panday performed more than 100 times across 18 countries, earning him recognition and accolades worldwide. His contribution to the arts was honored in 2022 when he was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian distinction.
Survived by his wife and son, Ram Sahay’s death has left a void in the world of folk dance. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed his condolences, noting that Panday’s perseverance and passion for art, despite facing numerous challenges, had brought the Rai dance form to the global stage. His remarkable achievements and dedication to the craft will continue to inspire future generations.
