Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek made confident starts to their French Open 2025 campaigns, moving into the second round with dominant performances on Monday.
Alcaraz powers past Zeppieri in straight sets
Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz showed why he’s the favorite again at Roland Garros with a commanding 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 win over Italian qualifier Giulio Zeppieri. Playing on Suzanne Lenglen court, Alcaraz displayed his usual speed and control, breaking early in the first set and maintaining the lead throughout.
“It was really solid,” Alcaraz said post-match. “Coming in as defending champion is never easy. I’m proud of my start here at Roland Garros.”
The Spaniard will now face Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan in the second round as he eyes a deep run in the French Open 2025.
Swiatek back in form with strong opening win
In the women’s draw, Iga Swiatek ended her near yearlong title drought with a confident 6-3, 6-3 win over Slovakia’s Rebecca Sramkova. The 2020, 2022, and 2023 Roland Garros champion looked sharp, breaking her opponent four times during the match.
Swiatek now holds an impressive 36-2 record at the French Open. “I knew I had to stay proactive and use my strengths,” she said after the win.
The Polish star will next meet Emma Raducanu, who won a hard-fought match against China’s Wang Xinyu 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. Raducanu returns to the French Open for the first time since 2022.
Rybakina survives scare to reach second round
Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina was also tested in her opening match but came through with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win over Argentina’s Julia Riera. The Kazakh, fresh off her Strasbourg title win, continues her strong clay season at the French Open 2025.
