A man who had been on the run for 20 years after killing his father-in-law has been arrested by the Area Police Office in Tulsipur, Dang, just months before the statute of limitations was set to expire. The arrested individual is 39-year-old Bir Bahadur Gurung, who had been living in Tarigaun.
Interestingly, after spending 15 years hiding in India, Gurung returned to Dang about five years ago and had been working at a poultry farm owned by a policeman’s family. Acting on a confidential tip-off, the Area Police Office in Tulsipur arrested him on Baisakh 12, 2082.
The case was pending, and the statute of limitations was about to expire in Shrawan.
According to DSP Anil Thakuri of the Area Police Office, Tulsipur, Gurung’s home is in Baruagaun, Tulsipur, Dang. He had fled with his wife after killing his father-in-law, Kashiram BK of Ashwara, Tulsipur, during a personal dispute on Shrawan 14, 2062.
After fleeing, he lived in various places in India, including Ludhiana and Bahraich. “He worked as a driver in India for 15 years,” said DSP Thakuri. “During this time, he used to secretly visit Dang and had recently settled in Tarigaun, Tulsipur.”
While back in Dang, Gurung was working as a driver at Shubhalaxmi Poultry Farm, which is owned by the father of a police constable. When his identity was discovered, he was arrested.
“The case of Kashiram BK’s murder had been pending,” said DSP Thakuri. “The 20-year statute of limitations for the murder charge was about to expire in Shrawan. But we have successfully arrested Bir Bahadur involved in the killing.”
He added, “Since a long time had passed since the murder, Gurung probably thought the case had settled and nothing would happen to him. But this is an example that even if criminals evade for years, the police will eventually catch them.”
