German Wimmer Appointed as Motherwell Manager

Former Stuttgart and Augsburg Assistant Takes Charge at Fir Park

German Wimmer has been appointed as the new manager of Motherwell, replacing Stuart Kettlewell, who stepped down due to personal abuse he received during a difficult run of results.

The 44-year-old Austrian, who previously worked as an assistant coach at Stuttgart and Augsburg, most recently managed Austria Vienna. He takes over with Motherwell sitting eighth in the Scottish Premiership after a 3-0 home defeat to Ross County.

Wimmer began his coaching career with Nuremberg in 2010 before joining Augsburg in 2018. He had a brief stint as interim head coach of Stuttgart in 2022, securing four wins from eight matches. Later, he managed Austria Vienna, winning 27 of his 61 games before being dismissed as the club finished eighth in the Austrian Bundesliga.

Last year, he left Generali Arena, and in December, Bristol Rovers were reportedly interested in appointing him, but a work permit issue prevented the move.

Stephen Frail had been in interim charge of Motherwell following Kettlewell’s departure, overseeing home defeats to Celtic and Ross County. Wimmer now faces the challenge of steering the Steelmen back up the table.
