Google Simplifies Gmail Encryption for Businesses

Google has announced a new update to Gmail that makes sending encrypted emails easier for businesses. This feature, currently in beta, doesn’t require custom software or exchanging certificates.

How the New Encryption Works

At first, the new encryption feature will only be available for users within the same organization. However, Google plans to expand it to all Gmail users and third-party email providers later this year.

Replacing the Old S/MIME System

The new encryption system replaces the older S/MIME protocol. Now, users can turn on additional encryption directly in the email draft window, without any extra setup.

How Encryption Works for Different Recipients

If the recipient doesn’t have S/MIME, they will access the encrypted message through a guest Google Workspace account. If they have S/MIME, the message will be received through the existing protocol.

Better Security with Client-Side Encryption

The new client-side encryption offers stronger protection than Gmail’s standard TLS encryption. Workspace admins will be able to control encryption keys and monitor encrypted files to ensure better security.

Google’s Recent Developments

In addition to this update, Google has made several important announcements and partnerships recently, such as AI tools in Google Maps and a collaboration with the Thailand Stock Exchange to improve market workflows.
