Government May Ban Pro-Monarchy Protests in Nepal

The Nepali government has issued a strong warning against the growing pro-monarchy movement. Government spokesperson and Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, said the government has full authority to ban such protests if they go against the constitution.

Speaking at a press briefing in Singha Durbar, Gurung clarified that the demand to bring back the monarchy is against the constitution and democratic values of the country.

He said the government has been very tolerant so far, allowing even those who oppose the constitution and current political system to organize rallies and speak freely. However, this should not be misunderstood as weakness.

“This is not fear or failure from the government. It is our democratic generosity,” he said. “But if these activities cross the line, we won’t just watch silently. The government will take necessary steps.”

Gurung also hinted that future action will depend on how the movement evolves. He made it clear that the government is closely monitoring the situation and will respond when needed.
