The Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has stated that the ministry is actively working to transform the telecommunications sector through the creation of new policies.
Speaking at the event ‘Shaping the Future of Telecommunications: Insights on Policy and Innovation’ organized by Tekpana in Lalitpur on Thursday, Minister Gurung mentioned that the ministry plans to amend the old telecommunications law and introduce a new one within this year.
“I will draft a new telecommunications bill this year and present it to the parliament,” he said, adding, “Without modifying policies and laws, it is difficult to bring transformation in the telecommunications sector.”
Also serving as the government spokesperson, Minister Gurung emphasized that along with policy modifications, it is crucial to advance technology generations in order to make telecommunications more efficient.
He also mentioned the ministry’s commitment to bringing connectivity across the country and initiating 5G technology. Minister Gurung highlighted that the future generations need to keep pace with technological advancements for the country’s development and expressed confidence that the ministry’s activities are focused on driving digital development.
“Technology is advancing every second,” he said. “If we cannot keep up with this pace, we will fall behind.”
As per the government’s commitment, the plan is to bring telephone and internet networks to every household. Minister Gurung emphasized that it is essential to make enough efforts and carry out policy reforms to achieve this goal. He also stated that alongside the Telecommunications Authority Act, it is necessary to create a separate policy for telecommunications.
In the same event, Communications Secretary Radhika Aryal acknowledged the need to amend the telecommunications law and regulations. She expressed that innovating telecom services and adopting new services would be effective in improving the sector, and assured that the government is always ready to improve telecommunications. The event included various sessions where discussions on technology were held.
