The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has started a new mission to provide high-speed internet in every ward across the country. This includes rural municipalities and areas where internet service is not yet available.
Data Collection Begins to Identify Internet-Deficient Wards
On Thursday, the NTA issued a notice saying they have started collecting data from wards without internet access. This information will help them decide where to expand broadband services first.
Broadband Internet to Be Delivered Through Fiber, Wireless, and VSAT
The government will provide broadband internet using optical fiber, wireless systems, and VSAT technology. The goal is to connect offices of municipalities, rural municipalities, and ward offices to the internet.
Rural Telecom Development Fund to Support the Project
The NTA announced that the Rural Telecommunications Development Fund will be used to carry out this program. This fund is specially designed to improve connectivity in remote and underserved areas.
Identifying Wards Left Out of Previous Projects
The data collection also aims to find offices that missed out on earlier internet projects or lost their internet after the free two-year service period ended. These offices will now be included in the new expansion plan.
Internet Providers Will Be Selected Soon
Once the data is collected, the NTA will start the process of selecting internet service providers. These providers will be responsible for installing and running the internet services in the targeted areas.
Supporting Nepal’s Digital Transformation
This project is a key part of Nepal‘s move toward digital transformation. By bringing internet to all wards, the government hopes to promote the use of digital tools and technology throughout the country.
