Why is the Government Paying Millions in Rent for Former Presidents Who Own Homes in Kathmandu?

Here’s another example of how taxpayer money is wasted in Nepal—our former presidents, who already own homes in Kathmandu, are still getting millions from the government in rent and other perks. Yes, you read that right.

In the last fiscal year alone, NPR 4,625,615 was spent on Ram Baran Yadav and NPR 3,518,555 on Bidya Devi Bhandari. This isn’t just rent—it includes their salaries, staff wages, electricity, and water bills. But let’s focus on the ridiculous part: house rent. Why is the government paying rent for people who literally have their own houses in the capital?

On top of that, they are provided an Under Secretary, a personal driver, a vehicle, and an office assistant, all funded by the state. And just to be clear—this is all happening while ordinary Nepalis struggle to afford a decent living in Kathmandu, where rent prices are soaring.

Shouldn’t these former leaders, who have already benefited immensely from their positions, be capable of covering their own living expenses? Why is public money being wasted on something so unnecessary? This is yet another example of how political elites continue to exploit the system while hardworking citizens foot the bill.
