Gurung Community Celebrates Tamu Lhosar, Welcoming the New Year

The Gurung community is celebrating Tamu Lhosar today, welcoming the New Year.

The term “Lho” means year, and “Sar” means change, so the day marking the change of the year is called “Tamu Lhosar.” The Gurung community celebrates Tamu Lhosar as the New Year in a grand manner.

The “Tamu Lhosar” festival is associated with the sun’s rays. It is believed to be celebrated on Poush 15 in areas like Lamjung, Gorkha, Tanahun, Syangja, Manang, Kaski, and Parbat, where the sun’s heat arrives first. According to legend, the festival is celebrated in Magh and Phagun in areas predominantly inhabited by the Tamang and Sherpa communities, as the sun’s heat reaches those regions later.

The night of Poush 15 is the longest, and from this night, the nights gradually shorten, which also adds to the significance of the festival. The government has declared a public holiday for Tamu Lhosar. On this occasion, the Gurung community is organizing a special program at Tundikhel.
