Hamro Patro, Nepal’s popular digital platform, is set to expand into the OTT (Over-the-Top) streaming market, bringing Nepali films to its vast user base. Sudina Gautam, the company’s Fintech Operations Director, has confirmed that Hamro Patro plans to acquire Nepali movies and offer them through its upcoming streaming service.
Nepali Film Acquisition and Royalty Model: Hamro Patro aims to collaborate with filmmakers by purchasing movies and implementing a royalty-based earnings model. In this system, revenue distribution will be based on the number of views each film receives. Details about the subscription model remain unclear—whether the service will be included for existing users or launched with a separate pricing plan.
Will the OTT Service Be a Standalone App?: One key question is whether Hamro Patro’s OTT service will be integrated into its current app or released as an independent platform. The company has followed a hybrid approach before, as seen with Hamro Pay, which initially launched within the main app before evolving into a separate service. Hamro Patro may adopt a similar strategy for its streaming platform.
Competition in Nepal’s Streaming Market: With its entry into the OTT industry, Hamro Patro will compete with global giant Netflix and domestic platforms like Cinemaghar and Kantipur Cinemas. with a massive user base exceeding 10 million, Hamro Patro has a strong advantage, offering a ready audience for its new streaming service.
