India’s star batter, Harmanpreet Kaur, is back as the captain of the women’s cricket team for the upcoming ODI tri-series in Sri Lanka. This tournament will take place from April 27 to May 11, and Harmanpreet returns after being rested for the home series against Ireland in January.

BCCI Announces 15-Member Squad for the Tri-Series

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named a 15-member squad for the tournament, with Smriti Mandhana as Harmanpreet’s deputy. The tournament will feature India, Sri Lanka, and South Africa. The first match will be between India and Sri Lanka on April 27.

Tournament Format and Schedule

The tri-series will follow a double round-robin format, where each team will play four matches. The top two teams will qualify for the final, which will be held on May 11. All matches will be played at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Key Players Missing from the Squad

India will miss two important players for the tournament. Pacers Renuka Singh Thakur and Titas Sadhu have both been injured and were not considered for selection.

New Faces in the Squad

The squad includes three uncapped players: Kashvee Gautam, Sree Charani, and Shuchi Upadhyay, all of whom are set to make their mark in the tri-series.

Harmanpreet’s Recent Injuries and Return

Harmanpreet Kaur had to be rested for the three-match ODI series against Ireland in January 2025, which India won 3-0. During that time, Smriti Mandhana led the team with Deepti Sharma as her deputy. Harmanpreet had suffered a knee injury during the home series against the West Indies in December 2024. She had to miss the last two T20Is but returned to play three ODIs.

Before her knee injury, Harmanpreet had also sustained a neck injury during the Women’s T20 World Cup match against Pakistan in October 2024.

Harmanpreet’s Recent Success with Mumbai Indians

Despite her injuries, Harmanpreet led the Mumbai Indians to victory in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025, where her team won the title last month.

Renuka Singh’s Absence

Pacer Renuka Singh was also rested for the Ireland series. Renuka was named Player of the Series in the ODIs against the West Indies in December 2024 after taking 10 wickets in three matches. However, she has faced back issues in the past, including a stress fracture, which has kept her out of the squad.
