A tragic helicopter crash near Manhattan, New York, has claimed the lives of all six people on board. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon in the Hudson River, between Lower Manhattan and Jersey City.
According to the Associated Press (AP), emergency teams quickly launched rescue operations on both sides of the river after the crash. New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that the victims included a family from Spain—three children, two adults, and the pilot. All six bodies have been recovered.
“Sadly, three children and three adults, including the pilot, lost their lives in the crash. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families affected,” Mayor Adams said.
Police reported that four people were confirmed dead at the scene, while two others were taken to the hospital but later died.
The New York Police Department posted on social media platform X, warning of potential delays in traffic and emergency vehicles around the West Side Highway and Spring Street area due to the crash.
The New York City Fire Department stated that the crash happened around 3:15 PM near Pier 40, close to West Houston Street and West Street.
Videos circulating on social media show the Bell 206 model helicopter flipping over after the crash and quickly sinking into the water.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump also responded to the tragedy on Truth Social, calling the crash “devastating.” He confirmed the deaths of the pilot, two adults, and three children, and described the footage of the crash as heartbreaking. He added that Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and his team are actively involved in the investigation.
