The Nepal Basketball Association (NeBA) has announced the start of the first Himalayan Java Basketball League (HJBL), which will begin on May 2, 2025, in Kathmandu. The league was officially revealed during a press conference held by NeBA.
Games to Be Played Four Days a Week
Although the league was planned only for weekends, the schedule has now expanded to include Tuesdays and Wednesdays due to the rainy season. Matches will take place on Saturdays, Sundays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.
Top Six Teams to Compete in the League
Six of the best basketball teams in Nepal will participate in the HJBL. According to NeBA President Bhim Singh Gurung, the teams are:
- The Times International Club
- Hounds Academy
- Kirtipur Basketball Club
- Royals Basketball Club
- Golden Gate International Club
- Samakhushi Basketball Club

32 Matches to Be Played Including Playoffs
A total of 32 matches will be held in the league. Each team will play against the others twice, making 30 games in the double round-robin format. Two additional playoff matches will decide the final winner.
Outdoor Venue with Backup Indoor Locations
The matches will take place at the outdoor court of the National Sports Council. Due to possible weather issues, two backup venues have been arranged: the NSC Indoor Hall and Kirtipur Indoor Hall.
Aiming to Grow Basketball in Nepal
President Gurung shared that the league is being organized to develop basketball in Nepal. This new platform will give players a chance to improve and help fans enjoy more games. The league is expected to continue in the coming years.
Estimated Budget is NPR 1.5 Million
The total estimated cost of the league is NPR 1.5 million. Prize details will be announced later by the organizers.
