HMPV Virus Detected in India

The number of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in India has reached 8. On Tuesday, two new cases were reported in Nagpur, Maharashtra. A 13-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy tested positive after experiencing persistent cough, cold, and fever.

Tests conducted at a private laboratory confirmed the infection. However, both children are reported to be in stable condition and did not require hospitalization.

A day earlier, four cases were reported: two in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu each, and one each in West Bengal and Gujarat, making a total of 6 cases. Most of the infected individuals are children.

The central government has advised states to increase surveillance for influenza-like illnesses and acute respiratory diseases and to raise awareness about preventing the spread of HMPV.

Health Minister J.P. Nadda assured the public that the virus is not a cause for alarm, calling it common and manageable. Experts also emphasized that HMPV is not new, as it was first identified in 2001.

The virus spreads through the air and can infect people of all age groups. The World Health Organization (WHO) is monitoring the situation and is expected to release a report soon.
