During the Champions Trophy 2025 semifinal against Australia in Dubai, Indian cricket team players wore black armbands to honor the late Padmakar Shivalkar, who passed away at the age of 84. A monumental figure in Indian domestic cricket, Shivalkar’s death on March 3, 2025, left the cricket world mourning.
Shivalkar, renowned for his exceptional left-arm spin, played a pivotal role in Mumbai’s dominance in the Ranji Trophy. He was part of the Mumbai side that won nine Ranji titles between 1965-66 and 1976-77. Despite never representing India at the international level, his contributions to domestic cricket were immense. He claimed 589 wickets in 124 first-class matches, with an impressive average of 19.69.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) expressed its deep sorrow over Shivalkar’s passing, describing him as a legend of Indian domestic cricket. His most iconic performance came in the 1972-73 Ranji Trophy final when he single-handedly led Mumbai to victory with remarkable figures of 8/16 and 5/18 against Tamil Nadu.
BCCI President Roger Binny paid tribute, praising Shivalkar’s mastery of left-arm spin, while Secretary Devajit Saikia acknowledged his long-lasting influence on Indian cricket. Although Shivalkar never played for India due to the presence of legendary spinner Bishan Singh Bedi, his legacy in Mumbai cricket remains undeniable.
In recognition of his extraordinary career, Shivalkar was awarded the Col. C.K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.
