Iran has officially qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a thrilling 2-2 draw against Uzbekistan in Tehran. Star striker Mehdi Taremi was the hero, scoring twice — including a crucial equalizer in the 83rd minute — to secure Iran’s fourth straight and seventh overall World Cup appearance.

Uzbekistan, needing a win to qualify for the first time ever, twice took the lead. Khojimat Erkinov opened the scoring in the 16th minute. But Mehdi Taremi leveled the game with a spectacular volley in the second half. Though Uzbekistan regained the lead through Abbosbek Fayzullaev, Taremi’s second goal from close range sealed Iran’s qualification.

World Cup 2026: Uzbekistan Still in the Race

Despite the setback, Uzbekistan remains three points behind Iran in Group A and will look to push for qualification through upcoming matches or playoff stages.

UAE Keeps Hopes Alive; Qatar Stumbles

Third-placed UAE kept its World Cup dreams alive with a 2-1 win over North Korea, closing the gap with Uzbekistan to just four points. Meanwhile, Asian champion Qatar’s hopes for automatic qualification ended after a 3-1 defeat in Kyrgyzstan.

World Cup 2026: Australia Steps Closer

Australia took a big step towards the World Cup with a solid 2-0 victory over China in Hangzhou. Jackson Irvine and Nishan Velupillay scored first-half goals to secure the win. Irvine continued his fine form, adding to his brace against Indonesia in the previous match.

China’s goalkeeper Wang Dalei’s mistake gifted Australia the second goal, and China now sits at the bottom of the group, with hopes of qualification all but over.

Saudi Arabia Holds Japan

Saudi Arabia remains in contention after a gritty 0-0 draw against already-qualified Japan. The result keeps the Saudis just three points behind Australia in Group C with two matches to play.

South Korea Held by Jordan

In Group B, South Korea was held to a 1-1 draw by Jordan at home. Lee Jae-sung gave Korea an early lead, but Mahmoud Al-Mardi equalized for Jordan after a deflected shot. South Korea remains top of the group with 16 points but will need to finish strong to secure their 11th consecutive World Cup appearance.

The Road Ahead

With Iran already through and Australia, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea still battling, the Asian World Cup qualifiers are heating up. The race for the remaining spots promises more drama and excitement in the upcoming matches.
