Exciting news for K-drama fans—IU and Byeon Woo Seok are officially teaming up for a new drama titled Wife of a 21st Century Prince (working title), which is set to premiere on MBC in 2026 as part of its Friday-Saturday lineup.

Set in a fictional modern-day Korea that retains its constitutional monarchy, the drama promises a compelling blend of romance, politics, and royal intrigue. It centers on the story of Sung Hee Joo and Prince Lee Wan, played by IU and Byeon Woo Seok respectively.

IU takes on the role of Sung Hee Joo, the brilliant and beautiful second daughter of Korea’s largest conglomerate. She seemingly has it all—except noble status. When her lack of royal lineage becomes a hurdle in her otherwise flawless life, she agrees to a contract marriage with a prince to secure the one thing she’s missing: a noble title.

Byeon Woo Seok portrays Lee Wan, the overlooked second son of the king. Though he holds royal blood, his life is marked by solitude and limited power. Isolated and emotionally guarded, his world begins to shift dramatically upon meeting Sung Hee Joo.

Joining the lead duo are Noh Sang Hyun and Gong Seung Yeon. Noh Sang Hyun plays Min Jung Woo, the prime minister and a member of a prestigious political dynasty. A childhood friend of Lee Wan and a senior from the royal academy to Hee Joo, his steady world is thrown off balance by the prince and Hee Joo’s sudden union.

Gong Seung Yeon takes on the role of Yoon Yi Rang, a woman born with a destiny to be queen. Coming from a lineage that has produced multiple queens, Yi Rang is confident in her future. Choosing duty over self, she is determined to defend her rightful place on the throne at any cost.

The drama will be directed by Park Joon Hwa, known for his work on beloved hits like “Rude Miss Young Ae,” “Let’s Eat” seasons 1 and 2, “What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim,” and “Alchemy of Souls.”

With its star-studded cast, high-concept setting, and seasoned director, “Wife of a 21st Century Prince” is already generating major buzz ahead of its 2026 debut.
