Jennifer Lopez has landed the lead role in Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of The Last Mrs. Parrish, the psychological thriller based on Liv Constantine’s bestselling 2017 novel. PEOPLE confirmed the casting news on April 17.
Lopez will not only star in the film but will also produce it through her company, Nuyorican Productions, alongside producing partners Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina. Producers Molly Sims and Liza Chasin have also joined the project.
The film will be helmed by legendary director Robert Zemeckis, known for classics like Forrest Gump and Back to the Future. This marks his return to the director’s chair following Here, which featured Tom Hanks and Robin Wright.
The novel, which gained widespread popularity after being selected as a Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick in December 2017, has sold over a million copies and has been translated into more than 34 languages.
The Last Mrs. Parrish centers around Amber Patterson, a woman in Connecticut who sets her sights on infiltrating the glamorous life of the wealthy Parrish family—Daphne and Jackson. Using Daphne’s kindness to her advantage, Amber becomes her confidante and slowly works her way into the inner circle, even vacationing in Europe with the family and growing close to Jackson. But her web of deception may unravel as secrets from her past threaten to emerge.
The screenplay is being written by Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton) and John Gatins (Flight), both of whom have received Academy Award nominations.
This isn’t Lopez’s only project with Netflix. She’s currently shooting another film for the platform titled Office Romance, in which she stars opposite Ted Lasso‘s Brett Goldstein, who also co-wrote the script. Lopez recently teased the film on Instagram, writing, “This is gonna be a fun one.”
Lopez’s latest film appearance was in the sports drama Unstoppable. She also stars in Kiss of the Spider Woman, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival and is slated for theatrical release on October 10.
