After years of anticipation, the Snoop Dogg biopic is officially in motion, with rising star Jonathan Daviss cast to portray the legendary rapper. The film will chronicle Snoop’s transformation from Calvin Broadus Jr. to global hip-hop royalty, and the man himself has given the casting his full support.
Daviss, best known for his breakout performance in Netflix’s Outer Banks, is stepping into the role of a lifetime—one that carries the weight of Snoop’s legacy, struggles, and triumphs. Speaking at the 2025 BET Awards, Snoop expressed his excitement and emotional connection to the project.
“Jonathan’s a dynamic actor with a great spirit,” Snoop told Entertainment Tonight. “It’s a blessing to find someone who can bring my story to life while I’m still here to witness it.”
The biopic is being helmed by Hustle & Flow and Coming 2 America director Craig Brewer, who is currently reworking the original script by Black Panther: Wakanda Forever co-writer Joe Robert Cole. Producing the film alongside Snoop are industry heavyweights Brian Grazer and Sara Ramaker.
Snoop emphasized the depth and authenticity the film will offer: “You’ll see everything—my roots, the things that shaped me, the evolution from a young man into the artist I became. It’s more than a story, it’s a full-circle moment.”
For Daviss, the opportunity is deeply personal and creatively transformative. “Snoop is an icon, but I really want to dig into who he was before the fame—understand his soul,” Daviss said. “I’m taking it step by step, and learning from one of the best. It’s surreal.”
This biopic also represents the first major project under Death Row Pictures’ new partnership with NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studios. Ryan Jones of Universal will oversee production, signaling a major milestone for both Snoop and the revitalized Death Row brand.
As the music biopic genre continues to boom—with recent hits like A Complete Unknown—expectations are sky-high. But with Snoop’s active involvement, Brewer’s directorial vision, and Daviss’ dedication to the role, this film is poised to deliver an unforgettable journey through one of hip-hop’s most iconic lives.
