Jonny Bairstow believes it would be “stupid” to dismiss the idea of returning to the England squad this summer. It has now been nine months since his last appearance in an England jersey, which was during the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final loss to India.
Following England’s disappointing exit, Bairstow was dropped from the Test side as part of a team reshuffle after their 4-1 series defeat against India. Despite reaching the milestone of 100 Test appearances in Dharamshala, Bairstow found himself sidelined as England explored other wicketkeeping options.
Competition for the Wicketkeeper Role
With Bairstow out of favor, England has tried different wicketkeepers. Jamie Smith was given the gloves last summer, while Jordan Cox was included for the New Zealand tour. However, when Cox suffered a thumb injury, Ollie Pope stepped in as the stand-in wicketkeeper.
Bairstow remains under contract with England until October but finds himself slipping down the pecking order. Despite this, he is determined to fight for his spot. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, the 35-year-old said:
“I’d be stupid not to [push for a return]. The whole purpose is to play for England. Everyone wants to do that. If you’re out of the team, you want to get back in. And that happens by scoring runs.”
Frustration Over Selection Uncertainty
Bairstow expressed frustration over his situation, pointing out that he is still centrally contracted but on the sidelines. He remains focused on his performances with Yorkshire in the County Championship as he aims to prove himself.
“It’s not my fault I was given a two-year contract just to stay on the periphery,” Bairstow remarked. “I’m doing everything I can, but selection is out of my control. I can load the gun, but I won’t be the one pulling the trigger.”
With England’s summer schedule approaching, Bairstow will be hoping his performances with Yorkshire earn him another opportunity at the international level.
