Popular Tamil-Telugu singer Kalpana Raghavendar, who was admitted to a hospital in an unconscious state earlier this week, has clarified that she did not attempt suicide. The singer explained that her loss of consciousness was due to an overdose of sleeping pills, which she took while struggling with insomnia at her home. Doctors confirmed that her condition is now stable.
Kalpana was rushed to the hospital on Tuesday after taking an excessive number of sleeping pills. She later informed the police that the overdose was unintentional and a result of her difficulty in sleeping. The singer’s police statement revealed that she had a disagreement with her daughter over her move to Hyderabad for studies, which may have contributed to her distress.
According to Kalpana, she traveled from Ernakulam to Hyderabad on March 4. Unable to fall asleep, she took eight sleeping pills initially, then consumed an additional 10, which caused her to lose consciousness. When her husband couldn’t reach her by phone, he contacted the Colony Welfare Association, who then alerted the police. A police team broke into the house and found Kalpana unconscious, immediately transporting her to the hospital.
Kalpana’s daughter, Daya Prasad, also addressed the situation on Wednesday, denying rumors of a suicide attempt. She explained that her mother had simply taken an accidental overdose of the prescribed medication for her insomnia. Daya reassured the public, saying, “This is not a suicide attempt. It was just a slight overdose of prescribed medication. Our family is perfectly fine, and my mom will be back in a few days.”
