Veteran actor Kamal Haasan has approached the Karnataka High Court to ensure that his upcoming film Thug Life gets released in the state, despite protests and an official ban by the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC).
Why the Film Was Banned in Karnataka
The controversy began after Haasan made a comment during the audio launch of Thug Life in Chennai on May 24. He said, “Kannada is born out of Tamil,” which sparked outrage among pro-Kannada groups. In response, the KFCC issued a 24-hour ultimatum demanding a public apology. When none came, they announced a ban on the film’s release in Karnataka on May 30.
Legal Petition Filed by Kamal Haasan
In an effort to challenge the ban, Haasan—through his production house Raaj Kamal Films International—filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court. The petition urges the court to:
- Direct the state government and police to allow the release of Thug Life
- Ensure that there are no disruptions or protests against the film
- Provide security during the film’s screening across the state
The movie is scheduled for release on June 5, and Haasan wants to ensure that it hits cinemas in Karnataka without any trouble.
Haasan Stands Firm on His Words
Despite the pressure, Kamal Haasan has refused to apologise for his statement. “I’ve been threatened before,” he said. “If I’m wrong, I’ll apologise. If I’m not, I won’t. This is my lifestyle, please don’t tamper with it.”
His firm stance has only intensified the debate, but he remains committed to defending his words and his film’s right to be screened.
