A total of 323 films have qualified for competition at this year’s Oscars. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released the list of all films competing in the major categories.
In the Best Picture category, 207 films have qualified for competition, including India’s action film Kanguva, starring Surya and Bobby Deol. Aamir Khan’s Lapatta Ladies has been recommended by the selection committee of the relevant country, while Kanguva was submitted through an American distributor.
According to the Oscars’ rules, a film becomes eligible for the main competition if it is commercially screened in one of the U.S. cities: Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Texas, Atlanta, or Georgia. Kanguva has taken advantage of this rule to compete at the Oscars. Previously, the Indian film RRR was also selected in this way.
Additionally, the runtime of a feature film must be longer than 40 minutes to qualify. Voting for the Oscars nominations will begin on Wednesday and will continue until January 12. The nominations will be announced on January 17, and the award ceremony will take place on March 2.
