Kathmandu Valley has been ranked as the most polluted city globally on Monday morning, according to real-time air quality data from Swiss firm IQAir.
At 7:30 am, the city recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 262, which falls under the “very unhealthy” category. This level of pollution poses serious health risks, particularly for sensitive groups.
Cities with High Pollution Levels
Following Kathmandu, other cities with high pollution levels include Delhi in India with an AQI of 179, Hanoi in Vietnam at 177, and Lahore in Pakistan with 172.
Understanding the Air Quality Index (AQI)
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the AQI scale ranges from 0 to 50, considered “good” for health. Any AQI above 300 is considered “hazardous.” When the AQI is between 201 and 300, it is deemed “very unhealthy,” which can significantly affect vulnerable individuals such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
Health Concerns Due to Pollution
Due to the rising pollution levels, Kathmandu hospitals have reported an increase in patients with respiratory issues. Health professionals have urged the public to limit outdoor activities, wear masks, keep windows closed, and stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
Possible Relief from Light Rainfall
Meteorologist Shanti Kandel mentioned that the haze over the Valley might persist for a few more days. However, there is a possibility of light rainfall this afternoon, which could temporarily help reduce the pollution levels.
