Kevin De Bruyne is set to leave Manchester City at the end of the 2024–25 season as a free agent. The Premier League club has decided not to offer a new contract to their long-time midfield star, signaling the end of an era at the Etihad.
The Belgian playmaker confirmed his departure last month and is now looking for a new project, either in Europe or abroad.
MLS and Saudi Clubs in the Race
With offers reportedly on the table from Saudi Arabia and MLS clubs, De Bruyne has plenty of options. According to ESPN, MLS side Chicago Fire is now preparing to start talks with the 32-year-old midfielder.
Inter Miami Holds Discovery Rights
Although Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami holds the “discovery rights” for Kevin De Bruyne in MLS, Chicago Fire believe they can move ahead. Inter Miami already has all three of its Designated Player (DP) slots filled by Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba, meaning they’re unlikely to make an official move.
This opens the door for Chicago Fire, who think they’re in the best position to land De Bruyne.
Other MLS Teams Interested in Kevin De Bruyne
Apart from Chicago Fire, D.C. United and New York City FC have also shown interest. However, like Miami, neither team currently has a free DP slot available.
Gregg Berhalter Wants a Playmaker
Chicago Fire head coach Gregg Berhalter, who previously managed the US Men’s National Team, is actively looking for a high-profile playmaker to boost the team’s attacking strength. De Bruyne fits that profile perfectly.
De Bruyne Focused on FA Cup Final
For now, Kevin De Bruyne is focused on helping Manchester City win the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace. He wants to end his City career on a high note and has said he’ll decide his next move after the season ends.
