Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have announced Ajinkya Rahane as the captain and Venkatesh Iyer as the vice-captain for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. Venky Mysore, the CEO of KKR, expressed his delight at having Rahane, a seasoned player, take on the leadership role. He also highlighted Iyer’s longstanding presence with the franchise and his leadership qualities, making him a natural choice for vice-captain.
“We are delighted to have someone like Ajinkya Rahane, who brings his experience and maturity as a leader. Also, Venkatesh Iyer has been a franchise player for KKR and brings a lot of leadership qualities. We are confident that they will combine well as we start the defense of our title,” said Venky Mysore.
Iyer, who was bought by KKR for a whopping Rs 23.75 crore in the auction, will bring his dynamic presence to the leadership group. Rahane, who was acquired for Rs 1.5 crore, will lead the team as they aim to defend their IPL 2024 title.
Expressing his excitement upon accepting the captaincy, Rahane said, “It’s an honour to be asked to lead KKR, which has been one of the most successful franchises in the IPL. I think we have an excellent and balanced squad. I look forward to working with everyone and taking up the challenge of defending our title.”
KKR will kick off their IPL 2025 campaign on March 22, facing off against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
