The Telugu film industry is in deep sorrow after the passing of legendary actor Kota Srinivasa Rao at the age of 83. He breathed his last early Sunday morning at his residence in Hyderabad, after battling health issues for several days. Over a career spanning more than four decades, Kota appeared in over 750 films, winning hearts with his unforgettable roles as a villain, comedian, and character artist. Early life and entry into films
Born on July 10, 1942, in Kankipadu, Kota Srinivasa Rao developed an interest in theatre from a young age. Before entering films, he worked as an employee at the State Bank of India. His film journey began in 1978 with the movie Pranam Khareedu, directed by Kranti Kumar. Kota gained recognition as a villain with the film Pratighatana and firmly established himself as a versatile actor with Aha Naa Pellanta.
Versatility and memorable roles
Kota acted alongside actor Babu Mohan in nearly 60 films, forming a popular comedic duo loved by audiences. Known for playing diverse roles—middle-class fathers, mischievous grandfathers, corrupt politicians, and comedy villains—he created a unique space in Telugu cinema. Kota married Rukmini in 1968, and the couple had two daughters and a son, Kota Prasad. Tragically, in 2010, his son passed away in a road accident, which deeply affected him emotionally. Besides acting, Kota served as a legislator representing Vijayawada East constituency. His acting skills earned respect from stalwarts across the industry, including actors Ali and Amitabh Bachchan.
