Krishnapur Municipality in Kanchanpur has issued a directive to demolish all Chhau Goths (menstrual huts) within 15 days.
The move comes after the death of a 28-year-old woman, Kamala Aauji, who was bitten by a snake while staying in a Chhau Goth during her menstrual period. She died on Saturday evening at Seti Provincial Hospital after being bitten on her left cheek on Friday evening.
Mayor Hemraj Bhatt stated that although the municipality has been actively running awareness campaigns against the harmful Chhaupadi tradition, the practice of isolating women during menstruation still persists in the community.
“We are working to eliminate this harmful tradition, but changing deep-rooted beliefs takes time,” said Mayor Bhatt.
The municipality has urged all residents to cooperate in dismantling Chhau Goths and to promote safe and dignified menstrual health practices.
