Krissann Barretto on Risking Career to Speak About Sushant's Death

Krissann Barretto, a friend of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput, has shared how speaking up about his death put her career and life at risk. She made these comments after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) closed the case and filed a report on Sushant’s death.

Krissann and Sushant were close friends from their time on TV. Sushant’s sudden death in June 2020 shocked the entertainment world. He had been a well-known actor on TV before moving to movies, where he also achieved success. While many of Sushant’s friends expressed their grief online, some were accused of trying to gain attention.

On Shardul Pandit’s podcast “Uncensored,” Krissann talked about how hard it was to speak out. She said, “In India, if you’re an actor, people think you’re just looking for attention when you grieve. They assume you’re acting, even when you’re genuinely sad. That’s why most people stayed quiet about it.”

Krissann explained that when she talked about Sushant’s death and the ongoing investigation, she was told to stay silent. She even lost work because of it. “It was risky. I risked my career and even upset my parents. People don’t understand how hard it is to take a stand. I lost a lot of job opportunities. I didn’t do it for fame; I did it for my friend. I didn’t care about losing work,” she said. She also mentioned how her friends advised her to stop speaking out, but she couldn’t stay silent.

Sushant died by suicide at the age of 34, and his death led to a long investigation by various agencies, including the CBI. His girlfriend, Rhea Chakraborty, was accused in the case but was later cleared. The CBI’s report also cleared Rhea and her brother Showik, who were arrested during the investigation. Many people have called for an apology to Rhea for the difficult time she went through.
