The Habitat, a popular studio in Khar, Mumbai, is the common link between two major controversies. A few weeks ago, India’s Got Latent made waves when Ranveer Allahbadia made an inappropriate comment on the show. Now, comedian Kunal Kamra has sparked fresh controversy with a viral video in which he calls a minister a “Gaddar.”

The Vandalism Incident

On Sunday night, following the viral spread of Kamra’s video, workers from Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction attacked The Habitat, the very studio where Kamra had performed. As a result of the vandalism, The Habitat has made the decision to shut down indefinitely.

Statement from The Habitat

In response to the attack, The Habitat issued a statement on Instagram, expressing shock and sadness over the incident. The statement read: “We are shocked, worried, and deeply hurt by the recent acts of vandalism. Artists are solely responsible for their views and creative choices. We have never been involved in the content performed by any artist, yet we continue to be blamed and targeted, as if we are a proxy for their performances.”

The Studio’s Decision

The Habitat went on to announce its closure: “We are shutting down until we find a way to provide a platform for free expression without jeopardizing our safety and property. We invite all artists, audiences, and stakeholders to share their views and help us navigate this situation while respecting performers’ rights.”

The studio also emphasized its neutral position, calling for dialogue and constructive conversations rather than violence. The statement concluded: “Violence and destruction undermine the very spirit of art and dialogue.”

A History of Backlash

This isn’t the first time The Habitat has been targeted. During the India’s Got Latent controversy, protests broke out outside the venue, prompting police to intervene.

Owned by Balraj Singh Ghai, a close associate of Samay Raina, The Habitat has long been a hub for stand-up comedy and live performances. With its sudden closure, loyal patrons and performers are left uncertain about its future.
