Mexican soccer team Club Leon is fighting a major legal battle to stay in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, starting June 14. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is expected to announce a decision on Tuesday, May 7.

Why Was Leon Removed from the Club World Cup?

FIFA expelled them because it shares the same ownership group, Grupo Pachuca, with another qualified Mexican team, Pachuca. FIFA rules state that two teams with the same owners cannot compete in the tournament to protect fairness and integrity.

What Is at Stake for Leon?

If they loses, they will miss the chance to compete in the global tournament and lose out on a guaranteed $9.55 million from FIFA, plus a possible share of $1 billion in prize money. Leon had been drawn to play Chelsea, Esperance, and Flamengo in the group stage.

FIFA’s Backup Plan If Leon Is Out

If CAS supports FIFA’s decision, a one-off playoff between LAFC and Club America will be held to fill the empty slot. FIFA had already drawn Mexican team and Pachuca into different groups in December, despite knowing about the shared ownership issue.

Background: How Did they Qualify?

Leon and Pachuca earned their spots by winning the 2023 and 2024 CONCACAF Champions League titles. But FIFA later ruled that their shared control “clearly indicates centralized decision-making,” which violates Club World Cup rules.

What Happens Next?

CAS held the hearing on Monday and has promised an urgent ruling by Tuesday. The decision will decide whether this Mexican team keeps its spot or is officially replaced.
