Lionel Messi continues to make history even at 37 years old. He scored a brilliant goal for Inter Miami during their 1-1 draw against Toronto FC in Major League Soccer on Sunday.
Messi found the net in extra-time after 45 minutes with a powerful volley, leveling the game for Inter Miami. However, despite his best efforts, the match ended in a draw as his team failed to find a winning goal.
Messi’s First Goal Denied by VAR
Earlier in the match, Messi almost scored in the 39th minute. However, after a VAR review, the goal was ruled out. The video showed that Messi had fouled Toronto’s French defender Nicksoen Gomis while creating space for his shot.
Messi Becomes Inter Miami’s All-Time Leader in Goal Contributions
Messi’s goal in the 45+5th minute made history. With this strike, he became Inter Miami’s all-time leader in goal contributions with 44 in MLS play. Remarkably, Messi achieved this milestone in just 29 matches, surpassing his former Argentina teammate Gonzalo Higuaín.
Federico Bernardeschi Gave Toronto FC an Early Lead
Toronto FC took the lead earlier in the game when Italian forward Federico Bernardeschi showed great skill inside the penalty area. He twisted and turned past defenders before poking the ball into the net, beating Inter Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender.
Messi Responds Quickly with a Stunning Goal
However, Toronto’s lead did not last long. Telasco Segovia found Messi with a pass on the edge of the box. Given too much space, Messi delivered a precise low shot into the corner, leaving Toronto goalkeeper Sean Johnson with no chance.
Messi Fights Hard But Lacks Support
Throughout the second half, Messi worked tirelessly to lift his team. He created many chances but received little help from his teammates. Surrounded by Toronto defenders, Messi struggled to find enough support to secure a win.
Javier Mascherano Reacts to the Performance
After the match, Inter Miami’s manager Javier Mascherano shared his thoughts. He admitted frustration with his team’s performance but stayed positive about the future.
“In the first half, for 10-15 minutes we disconnected from the game and they scored. Then we restarted and tried to make changes in the second half with substitutions,” said Mascherano.
He added, “It was a difficult game. People think Toronto is not strong because of their position in the table, but they have quality players. They played very well. Now, we need to focus on Wednesday.”
