Manchester City has secured the signing of Spanish midfielder Nico González from Primeira Liga side FC Porto on a four-and-a-half-year contract, the Premier League club announced on Monday.

City paid €60 million ($62.06 million) for the 23-year-old, according to a club source.

A product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, González made 37 appearances for the La Liga giants before moving to Porto in 2023. During his time in Portugal, he featured in 68 matches, registering nine goals and nine assists. He has also represented Spain at the under-21 level.

“It was a difficult transfer to complete because his performances have been outstanding, and he has been such an important part of what FC Porto are doing this season,” said City’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, in a club statement.

“We are really happy we have managed to get this done before the window closed,” he added.

González becomes City’s fourth signing of the January transfer window, following the arrivals of centre-backs Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis, as well as Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush.

The reigning Premier League champions, who lost Ballon d’Or nominee Rodri to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in September, are currently fifth in the English top-flight standings.

City is 15 points behind league leaders Liverpool, which has a game in hand, following a 5-1 defeat to rivals Arsenal on Sunday. Pep Guardiola’s side will next face English third-tier club Leyton Orient in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday.
