Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s iconic Mumbai bungalow, Mannat, is set for a major renovation this summer. To allow the extension work to begin, the actor and his family will temporarily move out of their famous Bandra residence. However, the renovation plans have already run into trouble, as a legal challenge has been raised against the project.
Activist Claims Rules Were Broken
Social activist Santosh Daundkar has approached the National Green Tribunal (NGT), alleging that the renovation violates environmental regulations. According to a report by Bar & Bench, Daundkar claims that Shah Rukh Khan and the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) failed to properly secure the necessary Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance. Since Mannat is a Grade III heritage structure, any structural changes require strict permissions.
Actor’s Expansion Plans Questioned
The report states that the actor plans to expand his six-storey bungalow by adding two more floors. The appeal also alleges that Shah Rukh committed fraud by merging 12 one-bedroom flats meant for mass housing into a single-family residence.
NGT Demands Proof
The NGT has responded by asking Daundkar to provide concrete evidence supporting the claims. A judicial panel, including Judicial Member Dinesh Kumar Singh and Expert Member Vijay Kulkarni, has given the activist four weeks to submit proof. If no evidence is presented, the tribunal may dismiss the appeal. The next hearing on the matter is scheduled for April 23.
