The Indian film industry has lost one of its brightest stars. Veteran actor, director, and the face of patriotic cinema, Manoj Kumar, passed away in the early hours of Friday, April 4, 2025, at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. He was 87.
Known to generations as ‘Bharat Kumar’, Manoj Kumar was celebrated for bringing India’s patriotic spirit alive on the silver screen through his impactful performances and storytelling. According to official medical reports, the cause of his death was cardiogenic shock due to an acute myocardial infarction (heart attack). He had also been battling decompensated liver cirrhosis in recent months, which severely affected his health. He was admitted to the hospital on February 21, 2025, after his condition worsened.
Dr. Santosh Shetty, CEO and Executive Director of the hospital, shared in a statement, “Veteran actor Shri Manoj Kumarji passed away peacefully at around 3:30 AM due to age-related complications. He had been under medical care for the past few weeks.”

Born Harikrishan Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Amritsar, Manoj Kumar earned national acclaim for his deep-rooted patriotism, which was a hallmark of his films. Classics like “Shaheed,” “Upkar,” and “Purab Aur Paschim” became cultural milestones, resonating with audiences across the nation. His unique ability to blend entertainment with nationalistic fervor earned him a special place in Indian cinema history.
Manoj Kumar also directed and produced several critically and commercially successful films including “Kranti,” “Clerk,” and the iconic “Roti Kapda Aur Makaan.” In the 60s and 70s, he stood as one of Bollywood’s most bankable stars, shaping the industry with his versatile talent and visionary filmmaking.

As the news broke, tributes poured in from across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned the loss on X (formerly Twitter), writing:
