Two Eclipses Coming to the US and Canada in March

March 2025 Eclipses

A total lunar eclipse and a partial solar eclipse will be visible in different parts of North America. Make sure to mark your calendars and prepare your eclipse glasses.

March 13-14: Total Lunar Eclipse Turns Moon Red

The first total lunar eclipse since 2022 will occur on the night of March 13-14, turning the moon a deep red color. This stunning event happens when the sun, Earth, and moon align perfectly. It will be the only total lunar eclipse visible in the US and Canada this year.

  • Time: The total eclipse will last from 2:26 AM EDT to 3:31 AM EDT.
  • Visibility: People in North America can witness the moon turning red, also called a “Blood Moon.”
  • Why the Moon Turns Red: Earth’s atmosphere bends sunlight, filtering out blue light and casting a red glow on the moon.
  • Weather Considerations: Even if the sky is partly cloudy, gaps in the clouds may allow for a good view.

March 20: Spring Equinox Marks the Change of Seasons

Spring officially begins on March 20 at 5:01 AM EDT with the spring equinox. This marks the moment when the sun’s direct rays shine on the equator, giving equal hours of daylight and nighttime across the globe.

  • What Happens After the Equinox?
    • Days will be longer than nights in the Northern Hemisphere.
    • Sunlight will become stronger, making it harder for snow to stay on the ground.
    • Even at 60°F, the inside of vehicles can get dangerously hot due to increased sunlight intensity.

March 29: Partial Solar Eclipse Visible in the US and Canada

A partial solar eclipse will take place on March 29, allowing people in the northeastern US and eastern Canada to witness the moon covering part of the sun. Although not as dramatic as a total solar eclipse, it will still be a fascinating sight.

  • Where to Watch:
    • New York City: 22% of the sun will be covered.
    • Boston: 43% of the sun will be blocked.
    • Quebec: Over 72% of the sun will be hidden by the moon.
  • Eye Protection is Essential:
    • Use proper eclipse glasses to safely watch the event.
    • Glasses from 2023 or 2024 are safe as long as they are not scratched or damaged.
    • Looking at the sun without protection can cause permanent eye damage.
  • Global Visibility: The partial solar eclipse can also be seen in parts of Europe and northwestern Africa.

Prepare for These Amazing Astronomical Events

March will be a thrilling month for skywatchers. The total lunar eclipse, spring equinox, and partial solar eclipse offer rare opportunities to witness nature’s wonders. Stay informed, check weather forecasts, and make sure to use the right eye protection for solar viewing. Don’t miss out on these incredible sights!
