Australia’s all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has decided to retire from One Day International (ODI) cricket, Cricket Australia announced on February 6, 2025. Stoinis, who made his ODI debut in 2015, has played 71 games in the format and now wants to focus on his T20 career.

In a statement, Stoinis expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he had while playing for Australia:
“Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold. Representing my country at the highest level is something I’ll always cherish,” Stoinis said.

He also shared that stepping away from ODIs wasn’t an easy decision but felt it was the right time to move on:
“This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career,” he added.

The 35-year-old was named in Australia’s provisional squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan but will not be taking part in the tournament. Stoinis’s best batting performance came early in his career with a knock of 146* against New Zealand in 2017. He recently played on Australia’s tour of Pakistan in November 2024 and finished his ODI career with 1495 runs and 48 wickets. He was also part of the Australian team that won the 2023 World Cup and was named ODI cricketer of the year for Australia in 2018-19.

Australian men’s Head Coach Andrew McDonald praised Marcus’s contribution to the team, both as a player and as a person:
“Stoinis has been such a pivotal part of our ODI setup for the past decade. He is a natural leader, an incredibly popular player, and a great person. He should be congratulated on his ODI career and all of his achievements,” McDonald said.

With Stoinis now stepping away from ODIs, he will focus on T20 cricket and continue contributing to Australia’s success in that format.
