Inter Miami edged past Sporting Kansas City with a 1-0 win in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup first round, thanks to a stunning goal from Lionel Messi in the 56th minute. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner received a pass from Sergio Busquets, controlled the ball with ease, evaded a defender, and fired a precise shot past goalkeeper John Pulskamp.
Miami’s head coach Javier Mascherano called the goal “fantastic,” while Sporting KC’s manager Peter Vermes admitted that Messi was the difference-maker, saying, “There’s one guy that can turn the game over, and he did.”
Challenging Weather Conditions
The match was played in extreme cold at Children’s Mercy Park, with the temperature at kickoff recorded at 3°F (-16°C) and a wind chill of -11°F (-24°C). The frozen pitch made ball control difficult, affecting both teams’ performances.
Mascherano praised his players for pushing through the harsh conditions, stating, “I’m very proud because I think it’s impossible to play in these conditions. It’s not human, you know. But they gave me 100%.”
Sporting KC’s Resilient Effort
Despite the loss, Sporting KC showed strong resistance against Miami’s attack. Vermes was pleased with his team’s effort, particularly considering the young players on the field.
“Outside of that goal, I thought we played really well. We had some great chances. I’m proud of our performance,” Vermes said.
He also acknowledged Messi’s unique talent, stating, “It’s not just us, it’s the whole world. Nobody plays well against him. He can change the game on his own, and very few players in history have had that ability. Two of them are from Argentina—Messi and (Diego) Maradona.”
Looking Ahead
With a 1-0 advantage, Inter Miami will head into the second leg looking to secure their place in the next round. Meanwhile, Sporting KC will aim to bounce back and overturn the deficit.
