Meta Cuts Reach of Irrelevant “#BMW” Spam Posts on Facebook

Meta has announced that it will reduce the reach of Facebook accounts that post low-quality or misleading content, especially those using irrelevant hashtags like #BMW to trick the platform’s algorithm. These posts often include unrelated photos and captions, long or distracting texts, or spam links disguised as engaging content. Meta said such creators will not only lose visibility but also become ineligible for monetization. To address this issue, Meta is also taking action against fake engagement networks—groups of accounts that artificially boost posts by commenting and reacting through fake pages. Soon, users will be able to secretly downvote irrelevant comments, and this feedback will help reduce the reach or even remove such misleading posts and pages.

This decision follows a rise in spam posts in countries like Nepal, where many pages post political images with unrelated captions and include hashtags like #BMW to get more attention. These posts often contain fake or confusing information, which has led to a poor experience for users. In response, Meta is testing a new Friends tab that shows posts only from added friends, excluding most ads—similar to a feature introduced by TikTok. By tightening control over spam and improving feed quality, Meta hopes to provide users with a better, more relevant experience on Facebook.
