The much-anticipated Minecraft movie has become a surprise box office hit, grossing an estimated $300 million (£233 million) worldwide during its opening weekend. The film, based on the immensely popular video game, had faced multiple delays before finally hitting theaters on Friday.

Featuring a star-studded cast including Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Jennifer Coolidge, the Minecraft movie has far exceeded its reported production budget of $150 million. Approximately half of the film’s earnings came from North America, according to industry tracking group EntTelligence. The success of the film came despite underwhelming reviews, with outlets like The Telegraph and The Guardian giving it low ratings.
Family Appeal Drives Success
Despite the mixed critical reception, the film has attracted large audiences, particularly families. Steve Buck, Chief Strategy Officer at EntTelligence, noted that the film “overperformed all industry projections” and resonated with a broad range of viewers, with a quarter of ticket buyers under the age of 13 and more than half male. The film’s performance makes it the largest domestic opening of 2025 and the biggest for Warner Bros. since 2023.
