Mira Murati’s Secret AI Startup Gains Key Talent from OpenAI

John Schulman, a co-founder of OpenAI, left the AI startup Anthropic after just five months and is reportedly joining Mira Murati’s new secretive company, according to a report from Fortune. Murati, who was previously the CTO of OpenAI, has been quiet about the details of her new venture since she left OpenAI in September.

Though it’s not clear what role Schulman will have at Murati’s startup, sources told Fortune that Murati has also brought in other former OpenAI employees, including Christian Gibson, who had worked on OpenAI’s supercomputing team.

In October, Murati was reportedly in talks to raise over $100 million for her company.

Schulman, who played a major role in developing ChatGPT, left OpenAI last August to join Anthropic. He explained his decision on X, stating that he wanted to focus more on AI alignment—making sure AI works as intended—and dive deeper into technical work.
