Mithun Chakraborty Served BMC Notice Over Alleged Illegal Construction in Malad

Bollywood veteran Mithun Chakraborty has been served a show cause notice by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) concerning alleged unauthorized ground-floor structures on his property in Erangle village, situated in Malad’s Madh area.

The notice, dated May 10, 2025, demands that Mithun provide a valid explanation for the unauthorized modifications on the plot. The BMC has warned that if a satisfactory response is not received within seven days, the illegal structures may be demolished at the actor’s expense, with potential legal proceedings to follow.

Responding to the allegations on May 17, Mithun Chakraborty reportedly denied any wrongdoing, stating that there were no unauthorized buildings on his property. He also mentioned that similar notices were issued to multiple individuals and that he was preparing a formal reply to submit to the BMC.

This notice comes amid a larger crackdown by the BMC, which recently launched a clearance drive in the Madh area after discovering nearly 130 unauthorized constructions, including several bungalows allegedly built using forged building plans. On May 9, nine such illegal structures, including some in Erangle village, were demolished. The BMC has scheduled removal of all 130 illegal constructions, erected over the past year, by May 31.

According to civic officials, the structures on Mithun’s plot were built without the necessary permissions from municipal authorities. The BMC’s show cause notice references violations of Sections 337, 342, and 347 of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMC) Act of 1888.

The notice requires the actor to justify why the illegal works should not be removed, altered, or demolished, or why the premises should not be restored to their original condition. Failure to provide a satisfactory explanation could result in demolition at Mithun’s cost and possible legal consequences under Section 475A of the MMC Act, which includes penalties such as fines and imprisonment.

The BMC has issued the notice under Section 351 (1A) of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, emphasizing the seriousness of the alleged infractions. The ongoing demolition drive reflects the civic body’s commitment to curbing unauthorized construction in the city.
